In 2011, Sheriff Obenberger initiated an investigation against Deputy Jonathan Madrid for alleged theft of county gasoline, which was found to be unfounded. He also ordered Madrid to sit in a chair in the front lobby for nine hours a day, a practice deemed ‘demeaning and insulting’ by an arbitrator. Additionally, Obenberger was accused of attempting to stop Madrid from receiving disability benefits and was found to have acted in a ‘discriminatory and capricious manner’ leading to Madrid’s wrongful termination. A court ordered Madrid’s reinstatement and compensation for lost wages.
