In February 2013, BCI and Homeland Security agents searched the home of Sheriff Vaughn Klier after child pornography was downloaded from the sheriff’s IP address. Initially considered a suspect, the sheriff was cleared of any wrongdoing after his son was found to have child porn and was convicted on a felony charge of possession of certain materials prohibited. Klier expressed strong dissatisfaction with the manner in which the search was conducted, stating that he was disarmed while on duty and his house was thoroughly searched. He criticized the agents’ training and leadership, suggesting they acted as ‘rogue cops.’ No disciplinary action was taken against the agents involved in the search. Klier retired from his position in April 2013.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
