Deputy Sidney Nicholson, serving as a School Resource Officer, was involved in a 2019 incident where an 11-year-old Hispanic child with autism was aggressively handcuffed and left in a patrol car for hours, leading to the child’s self-inflicted injuries. The ACLU filed a lawsuit in March 2021 against the Douglas County School District and Sheriff’s Office, alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fourth Amendment. The case highlighted concerns over the treatment of students with disabilities by law enforcement in schools.
