In August 2011, Deputy Steve Gjerdevig, along with Deputy Dan Wise, conducted a traffic stop near Abercrombie, ND, involving three men: Christopher Miranowski, Adam Nelson, and Derek Grund. The men alleged that the deputies used excessive force, including yelling with perverse language and physical assault. A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed in 2012, and in January 2016, the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund settled the case for $142,500. The settlement terms specified that the payments were not an admission of liability. ([insurancejournal.com](https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/midwest/2016/01/22/395727.htm?utm_source=openai))
