In 2023, Sheriff Steven Tompkins agreed to pay a $12,300 civil fine for violating the state’s conflict of interest law. The violations included creating a paid position in the Sheriff’s Department for his niece without proper procedures and repeatedly asking subordinates to perform personal errands during their paid work hours. Tompkins disagreed with the Commission’s determination but waived his right to a hearing and admitted to the violations.
