On August 15, 2024, while employed as a school resource officer, Carter was involved in a fatal shooting outside the Barrel House Grille in Walterboro. She was charged with murder and a weapons offense after allegedly firing a handgun at a 28-year-old woman during an argument that escalated from inside the restaurant to the parking lot. Carter resigned from the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office following the incident.
