Former Sheriff Terry Alan Jones was involved in a conspiracy to illegally obtain cash from motorists traveling through McIntosh County. Between November 2007 and May 2009, Jones and his undersheriff, Mykol Brookshire, conducted traffic stops to seize large sums of money under the pretense of law enforcement activities. They would confiscate cash, report only a portion to the District Attorney for forfeiture, and divide the unreported funds between themselves. In one instance, they seized money from an undercover federal agent. Both Jones and Brookshire resigned in May 2009 and were sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for conspiracy under color of law to interfere with interstate commerce.
