In 2004, Officer Thad Boyer was involved in an incident where he severely beat Nic Korleski, who had fled a traffic stop. Korleski sustained significant injuries, including a coma and facial stitches. Boyer was dismissed from the department following this incident. In 2019, he was rehired by the Sioux City Police Department. In April 2021, Boyer was involved in another controversial incident at a Perkins restaurant, where he aggressively confronted and threatened to tase John Wright, a Black patron, despite bystanders indicating Wright had done nothing wrong. This led to public outcry and a petition for his removal.
