On August 9, 2020, detention center officer Thomas Caffrey Jr., along with two other officers, allegedly assaulted inmate Clifford Bryan Beaudin Jr. at the Aiken County Detention Center. The officers reportedly struck Beaudin multiple times with closed fists and used a weapon to deliver electric shocks while he was not resisting. An internal investigation led to Caffrey’s termination, and on January 15, 2021, he was arrested and charged with misconduct in office by a public official. Beaudin filed a lawsuit against the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, alleging negligence in his treatment.
