In January 2017, detention center officer Timothy Gibson was accused of assaulting inmate Otis Owens during a search at the Aiken County Detention Center. Gibson allegedly probed Owens’ belly button, ran his hands up the inside of Owens’ legs, and grabbed and squeezed his testicles, causing injury. Owens filed a lawsuit against Gibson and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, alleging gross negligence and assault. The case against Gibson is pending.
