In March 2020, Officer Timothy Rankine was involved in the death of Manuel Ellis by kneeling on his back despite Ellis’s pleas of being unable to breathe. Rankine was charged with manslaughter but was acquitted in December 2023. He later filed a $47 million defamation claim against city and state officials, alleging false accusations of misconduct. Rankine resigned from the Tacoma Police Department, receiving a $500,000 settlement.
