In the 2007 case of Deborah S. Meyer, Deputy Sheriff Tommy Painter was implicated in the alleged provision of false information leading to Meyer’s involuntary psychiatric commitment. Meyer argued that Painter and other officers falsely reported her as violent to justify the detention. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals found that a reasonable jury could infer intentional misconduct by the officers, potentially infringing on Meyer’s Fourth Amendment rights. The case was remanded for additional proceedings.
