On or around October 30, 2019, used a racial slur during communication with a former Mauldin High School student while working at a Mauldin/Hillcrest football game. Although he and the student were friends and may have considered the language non-offensive, others around them were likely offended. Greenville County Schools discontinued their relationship with Koutsos as an adjunct coach and removed him from the pool of officers eligible for school zone patrol or to serve as security at athletic events.
