On December 23, 2022, Officer Tyler Barnett was involved in the arrest of Demarcus Key, who was assaulted by off-duty Sheffield Police Officer Max Dotson at a Florence liquor store. Barnett arrived on the scene, arrested Key, and allegedly struck him during the arrest. A lawsuit filed by Key alleges that Barnett, along with other officers, provided special treatment to Dotson due to his previous employment with the Florence Police Department. The lawsuit seeks $50 million in damages for unlawful arrest and excessive force.
