Officer Tyler Butler was involved in the August 8, 2020, fatal shooting of Jonathan Randell during a mental health crisis. After deploying non-lethal force, Randell threw a knife toward officers, leading Butler and others to fire, inflicting over 50 gunshot wounds. The city settled a civil rights lawsuit for $2 million with Randell’s estate. Butler remains with the Tulsa Police Department.
