Former Sheriff Tyrone Clark was accused of sexual harassment by detention officer Debra Hopson, who alleged that shortly after her hiring in May 2015, Clark propositioned her for sexual favors, implying her job was contingent upon compliance. Hopson was placed on administrative leave in February 2016 and later testified against Clark before a grand jury and the Alabama Supreme Court. In July 2016, the Alabama Supreme Court removed Clark from office for willful neglect of duty and corruption. Hopson filed a federal lawsuit against Clark and other parties, alleging violations of her employment rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, as well as sex discrimination and retaliation under the Civil Rights Act.
