In June 1998, Undersheriff Stein, along with Sheriff Jett, seized a residence as a crime scene without a valid search warrant. This action led to a lawsuit alleging violations of the Fourth Amendment. The jury found that the officers reasonably relied on the District Attorney’s advice, granting them qualified immunity. The case is documented in Dixon v. Wallowa County, 336 F.3d 1013 (9th Cir. 2003).
