In May 2020, Undersheriff Steve Miera led the Taos County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations team in assisting the Española Police Department during the execution of a search warrant at the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office. The operation involved forcibly entering the office, discharging firearms, and causing property damage estimated at around $10,000. Deputies present during the incident reported being subjected to assault and unreasonable seizure, with snipers pointing weapons at them, leading to claims of civil rights violations. Multiple deputies filed notices of tort claims against Taos County, alleging that the actions of Undersheriff Miera and his team violated their civil rights and caused significant trauma.
