In 2022, multiple deputies were implicated in the mistreatment of inmate Alan Ronald Thibodeau, who suffered from schizophrenia and diabetes. Thibodeau was allegedly subjected to excessive force, including the use of stun guns and chemical munitions, while in custody. He was also denied necessary medical care, leading to severe malnutrition and his death on July 23, 2022. A lawsuit was filed against Bamberg County alleging gross negligence and reckless acts leading to Thibodeau’s death.
