In July 2021, multiple deputies were involved in the restraint and tasering of Jarvis Evans, a 40-year-old man with a history of mental illness and drug addiction. Evans was restrained, placed in a restraint chair, and tasered multiple times. He was later found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, alleging excessive force and failure to provide medical attention.
