On May 7, 2021, multiple York County Sheriff’s Office deputies fired nearly 50 shots at Trevor Mullinax, who was experiencing a mental health crisis and sitting in his pickup truck with a shotgun. Mullinax was struck approximately nine times, including in the head. His mother, standing beside the truck, was also in the line of fire but was not injured. Mullinax and his mother filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force and lack of de-escalation. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the incident, and the 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office cleared the deputies of any wrongdoing. Three of the four deputies involved continue to serve with the department; the fourth left for the private sector in April 2022.
