In March 2011, an officer was suspended with pay pending an investigation into allegations of assaulting inmate Carlos Mendez Jr. during his intake at the Burleigh County Detention Center. Mendez alleged that the officer, along with two Bismarck police officers, physically assaulted him by throwing him into an elevator, kneeing him in the groin, and shoving his head into a corner. The case was reviewed by the Morton County State’s Attorney’s Office, and an internal affairs investigation was conducted. The outcome of these investigations is not specified in the available sources.
