In April 2016, an officer arrested 26-year-old Awni Safadi for disorderly conduct after Safadi called the officer a ‘fucking asshole’ during a traffic stop. Safadi filed a federal lawsuit alleging violation of his First Amendment rights, illegal search and seizure, and malicious prosecution. A jury acquitted Safadi of disorderly conduct in October 2017, affirming his right to free speech.
