In 2016, a federal lawsuit alleged that multiple officers within the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office subjected former Pocomoke City Police Officer Franklin Savage to a racially hostile work environment. The harassment included repeated racial epithets and other racially charged acts. After Officer Savage complained, he and others who supported him faced retaliatory actions, culminating in the termination of his employment. The Justice Department intervened in the lawsuit, seeking to address these violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The case resulted in a $1.2 million settlement in 2020, with the Worcester County Sheriff and the State of Maryland agreeing to pay $100,000 to Officer Savage. The identities of the officers involved in the misconduct were not publicly disclosed.
