In February 2021, multiple officers at the Glades County Detention Center were accused of excessive force, including pepper spraying, assaulting, and placing detainees Kevin Louis Brown and Kemar Dwayne Williams into solitary confinement in retaliation for their participation in a civil rights complaint about medical abuse at the facility. Between FY 2015 and FY 2019, the DHS OIG Hotline received 1,200 allegations related to concerns about segregation at the Glades County Detention Center.
