In May 2023, multiple Border Patrol agents were involved in the fatal shooting of 58-year-old Raymond Mattia, a Tohono O’odham man, near his home in Menager’s Dam, Arizona. Mattia was shot nine times after allegedly complying with agents’ commands. The incident led to a federal lawsuit filed by Mattia’s family in May 2024, accusing the agency of excessive force and seeking accountability for his death. The lawsuit also highlighted broader concerns about the use of force against Native communities and the need for transparency in investigations involving CBP personnel.
