In May 2017, multiple deputies at the Auburn Main Jail were involved in the excessive use of force against mentally ill inmate Beau Bangert. Video footage showed deputies rushing into Bangert’s cell, using a body shield, punching, and Tasing him. Following an internal investigation, three officials were fired, and the county agreed to a $1.4 million class-action settlement. Two of the fired officials pleaded no contest to assault charges, while the third had her case dismissed.
