In October 2017, an unnamed deputy instructed inmate Mayco Rodrique to remove his shoelaces during booking. When Rodrique mentioned a law change regarding shoelaces, the deputy slammed his head into a wall and twisted his right arm until it broke. Rodrique was then hogtied and placed in solitary confinement without medical attention. The incident was captured on video. Rodrique filed a lawsuit, resulting in a $97,500 settlement from the county. The deputy involved remained employed with the department.

In June 2015, inmate Deshun Williams alleged that a sergeant, angered by comments Williams made about the sergeant’s wife during a phone call, threw him to the ground, smashing his face and mouth, while other deputies twisted his arm and ankle, causing injury. The sergeant had expressed intent to punish Williams severely prior to the incident. An investigation led to the sergeant’s demotion back to deputy and a lieutenant’s demotion to sergeant for failing to address the incident appropriately.
