In August 2019, inmate Juan Martin Nuñez suffered a severe spinal injury after running headfirst into his cell door. He was left immobile in his cell for 24 hours without medical care. Multiple nurses fabricated records detailing checks that did not occur. Five nurses faced formal accusations; one had their license revoked, two voluntarily surrendered their licenses, and proceedings against two others are pending. The county settled with Nuñez for $7 million.
