In 2010, an officer issued a disorderly conduct citation to Seth Dame after Dame made a rude gesture (middle finger) towards the officer. The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah filed a lawsuit on behalf of Dame, claiming violations of his First and Fourth Amendment rights. The case was settled in 2012 for $5,000, and the settlement required the department to provide regular First Amendment training to its officers.
