In 2005, a lawsuit was filed against an officer from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, alleging that the officer intentionally slammed a cell door on a prisoner’s hand and then waited an hour before allowing him to receive medical attention for serious injuries. The prisoner claimed that the officer’s actions constituted a violation of the Eighth Amendment.
