In February 2024, Dennoriss Richardson filed a federal lawsuit against several Sheffield police officers, including former Lt. Max Dotson, alleging that while detained in the Sheffield City Jail from November 30 to December 1, 2022, he was beaten, strapped in a restraint chair for hours, tased, and sprayed with mace in his cell. Richardson was found dead in September 2024, and his wife believes his death is connected to the lawsuit.
