    In the 1980 case Nicholson v. Choctaw County, the court found that the Choctaw County Jail, under the supervision of the Sheriff’s Department, failed to correct fire safety violations and provided inadequate medical and dental services to inmates. These deficiencies were deemed to violate inmates’ Eighth and Fourteenth Amendment rights, indicating systemic issues within the department at that time.
