In August 2018, Sitarah Daniels, a 32-year-old woman with a history of mental health issues, was admitted to the Monroe County Jail. Despite her known suicide risk, she was removed from constant supervision less than a week after admission. On September 4, 2018, Daniels hanged herself in her cell and was found unresponsive 25 minutes later. She died the next day. A lawsuit alleged negligence in failing to follow proper suicide watch protocols. The county reached a $360,000 settlement with Daniels’ family in 2024. Sheriff Todd Baxter announced disciplinary actions against the involved deputies, including one demotion.
