In September 2023, Courtney Williams filed a lawsuit against the city of Florence and its police department, alleging wrongful arrest for shoplifting at a Walmart store in August 2022. Williams claimed she was mistakenly identified as the shoplifter and arrested in November 2022. The lawsuit alleged negligence, civil assault, and false arrest, seeking compensation for emotional distress, reputational damage, and financial losses. The suit also claimed that the city and police department hired unqualified officers and failed to adequately train and supervise them.

In March 2020, a lawsuit was filed against the city of Florence and Constable Christopher Bachochin, alleging excessive force during a traffic stop in March 2018. The plaintiff, Brandon Domonique Fludd, was shot three times by Bachochin while attempting to flee the stop. The lawsuit claimed that Bachochin’s use of force was unjustified and resulted in permanent injuries to Fludd. It also alleged that Bachochin was not properly supervised or trained by the city.

In August 2021, former Florence County deputy Brian Proffitt was sentenced to six months in prison for hitting a handcuffed victim several times on the head with a flashlight during a February 2019 incident. Proffitt pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and battery and misconduct in office. He was also found to have omitted information about the beating from his initial report and a follow-up report. Proffitt had previously been terminated from the Darlington Police Department in 2009 for violations including sleeping on duty.
