Deputy Wendy Childers was involved in the 2013 in-custody death of Jackie McBeth. McBeth, who was unarmed and already secured with handcuffs and leg irons, died due to restraint asphyxia while being subdued by officers. The court found that the continued application of a chokehold and the piling of officers on McBeth’s torso while he was in the prone position were unnecessary and disproportionate uses of force. This incident led to a lawsuit alleging excessive force and failure to train deputies in appropriate procedures for handling mentally ill citizens.
