In February 2023, Officer Wesley Shifflett fatally shot unarmed shoplifting suspect Timothy McCree Johnson after a foot chase near Tysons Corner Center mall. Shifflett claimed self-defense, believing Johnson was reaching for a weapon. However, a jury acquitted him of involuntary manslaughter but convicted him of reckless handling of a firearm. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis fired Shifflett for violating the department’s use-of-force policies. Shifflett faces up to 5 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February 2025.
