In February 2019, former Chief Deputy William ‘Billy’ Lane was indicted on 40 counts, including 11 counts of using his official office for personal gain, one count of first-degree theft of property, and 28 counts of fraudulent use of a debit or credit card. These charges stemmed from his alleged misuse of an account belonging to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office’s Rodeo Association. The indictments followed an investigation by the Alabama Ethics Commission based on multiple complaints.
