    Former Clarke County Sheriff William Ray Norris faced multiple charges, including using his office for personal gain, filing false statements, and income tax evasion. In May 2021, Attorney General Steve Marshall filed for his impeachment, citing corruption and crimes involving moral turpitude. Norris resigned from office in May 2021. In September 2022, he pleaded guilty to making a false statement on a loan application, admitting to using part of a $75,000 loan to pay off personal debts. In April 2023, he was sentenced to five years of probation for this offense. Additionally, in January 2022, he was charged with unlawful use of campaign contributions, violating the Fair Campaign Practices Act, and income tax evasion. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
