Former Sheriff Gary Butler was implicated in a lawsuit filed by former officer Kevin Halbig in 2009. Halbig alleged that Butler and Commander Cheryl Powell falsely accused him of fraudulent use of a credit card, leading to his arrest and negative press coverage, which Halbig claimed affected his election campaign for Sheriff. The lawsuit included claims of retaliation and defamation. The court granted in part and denied in part the motion to dismiss the case, allowing some claims to proceed.
