In November 2018, shortly after Andy Schneider was elected as the new Grand Forks County Sheriff, he approached Lt. Gary Grove, who was 61 at the time, and suggested that Grove should consider retirement. Schneider stated, ‘You need to retire.’ Grove declined an alternative position in warrants offered by Schneider. Believing he was forced into retirement due to his age, Grove filed an age discrimination complaint with the North Dakota Department of Labor and Human Rights on December 13, 2018. The Department of Labor opened a case on January 28, 2019, and awaited a formal response from the Sheriff’s Office. Grove had been with the department since 1978.
