Springfield police detective Gregg Bigda was at the center of a 2016 civil rights abuse scandal in which he was caught on video berating and threatening to kill juvenile suspects and plant drugs on them after a car chase. He was federally indicted on multiple civil rights charges and accused of filing false reports, but was acquitted at trial in 2022. Bigda, who had a long history of excessive force complaints, was later arrested in 2023 for DUI; in 2024 the state POST Commission decertified him as an officer, and the department suspended him indefinitely without pay pending his expected termination.
