J. Warren Basnett – Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office

In April 2023, Sheriff J. Warren Basnett resigned following multiple allegations of misconduct. Incidents included allowing students to mishandle firearms during a school career day event on March 31, 2023, where students were seen pointing unloaded firearms at each other. Additionally, Basnett faced accusations of mismanagement, such as selling five used cruisers for $100 each in a ‘silent auction’ without proper approval, violating civil service rules by promoting a deputy without following required procedures, and failing to provide consistent court security. These actions led the county prosecutor to seek his removal for mal-administration, possible misfeasance, neglect of duty, and incompetence.
