In May 2015, former Carbon County Sheriff James Cordova pleaded guilty to misuse of public money, a third-degree felony. He admitted to using his patrol truck and a county-owned trailer to move personal property from his home in Carbon County to his new residence in Washington County. Additionally, Cordova used his county-issued credit card 26 times between December 2013 and April 2014 to purchase over $2,100 worth of fuel for these trips. As part of a plea agreement, his guilty plea was held in abeyance for three years, contingent upon full restitution, completion of 80 hours of community service, and no new criminal violations. If these conditions were met, the guilty plea would be dismissed.
