In January 2019, Officer James Craig and his son, Hayden Craig, confronted Russell Shartzer at the residence of Craig’s ex-wife, Gretchen Craig. Shartzer alleged that both men attacked him without cause, resulting in serious injuries. Following the incident, Shartzer was arrested based on Craig’s report, but the charges were later dismissed. Shartzer filed a federal lawsuit against James Craig, Hayden Craig, and the Jeffersonville Police Department, claiming excessive force and false arrest. An internal investigation led to James Craig’s resignation from the department in September 2019.
