In May 2023, Sheriff James Hudson Jr. was named in a lawsuit alleging negligence in the investigation of the 2021 fatal shooting of 18-year-old Caleb James. The lawsuit claims that the Sheriff’s Office failed to follow basic investigative protocols, such as proper evidence control, and did not assist the coroner’s independent investigation. The coroner’s findings led to murder charges against the suspect, despite the alleged shortcomings of the Sheriff’s Office.
