In 2019, Officer Jeffrey Nelson fatally shot Jesse Sarey, an unarmed homeless man, during an arrest attempt. Nelson was convicted of second-degree murder and first-degree assault in 2024 and sentenced to over 16 years in prison. This marked the first conviction under Washington’s revised law facilitating the prosecution of on-duty police killings. Nelson had a history of excessive force, including two prior fatal shootings, leading to settlements exceeding $6 million.
