Officer Artis, who is white, joined Ellis and Robinson in the lawsuit alleging racial discrimination and retaliation within the Hobbs Police Department. Artis reported that after associating with Ellis and Robinson and supporting their claims, he faced retaliatory actions, including being assigned undesirable tasks and experiencing a hostile work environment. These claims were part of the 2017 lawsuit that concluded with a $1.4 million settlement in 2021.
