John Clements – Clark County Sheriff’s Office

In 2022, Sheriff John Clements filed a federal lawsuit alleging he was overworked and underpaid while serving as the only law enforcement officer in Clark County. He claimed that staff shortages required him to work nearly all day and night with minimal sleep, leading to health issues including collapsing twice in the courthouse. Clements alleged that the county commissioners retaliated against him for investigating Commission Chairman Greg Shenton for misuse of public funds by refusing his requests to hire additional deputies and forcing him to work under unreasonable conditions. The lawsuit claims violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and seeks compensatory damages.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
