John Grismore – Franklin County Sheriff’s Department

In August 2022, then-Captain John Grismore was captured on video kicking a handcuffed and shackled detainee twice in the groin. This led to his termination from the department and a charge of simple assault. Despite these events, Grismore was elected sheriff in November 2022. The Vermont Criminal Justice Council found that he violated the state’s use of force policy and voted to permanently revoke his law enforcement certification in December 2023. Two trials in 2024 resulted in mistrials, and the assault charge was eventually dropped. A legislative committee recommended his resignation, but Grismore refused to step down.

Important Community Guidelines

It is strictly against our rules to:

  • Make threats of any kind
  • Share private information such as personal emails, home addresses, or phone numbers

Violation of these rules will result in immediate content removal and possible account suspension.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
